Blantyre

Blantyre was founded in 1876 and declared a municipality in 1895. This makes it the oldest city in Southeast and Central Africa, with a long history and rich cultural heritage. Blantyre is located in southern Malawi in the mountains of the Shire Highlands at an altitude of about 1000 m and is the second largest city in the country with a population of around 900,000. Blantyre shares a city parliament with the neighboring city of Limbe. Together, the two cities cover an area of 215 km². The market in Blantyre is famous.

The cities of Blantyre and Limbe are considered the commercial center of Malawi and are home to numerous national and international companies as well as three of the five colleges of the University of Malawi. In 1968, a partnership agreement was signed between the cities of Blantyre and Hanover. This partnership still exists today and is supported by the Malawi Friendship Circle and Town Twinning Association and promoted through various projects in the field of sustainable development and culture in Malawi and Hanover. aware&fair e.V. has been cooperating with the Friendship Circle since the beginning and implements projects.
